Why Ethics Matter

There’s a lot riding on nonprofit fundraising.
Not just dollars—but dignity. Trust. Integrity.

That’s why I believe every nonprofit should know, study, and adopt the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ (AFP) Code of Ethics. And while we’re at it? We should all be shouting it from our websites.
So what is the AFP Code of Ethics?
It’s a short, powerful set of standards that guide how fundraising professionals should conduct themselves. We're talking about honesty. Transparency. Accountability. Respect for donor intent. Commitment to equity and inclusion.
In short: it’s a roadmap for doing the work right.
Why it matters
Let’s be real. Fundraising can be vulnerable work—for donors and nonprofits.
Donors want to know their gift will be used responsibly. Staff want to know their workplace holds high standards. Communities want to know we’re walking the talk when it comes to integrity.
A shared ethical code helps everyone stay on the same page.
It also:
Builds donor confidence (especially in an era of growing distrust)
Protects staff and volunteers from unethical requests or pressure
Demonstrates leadership in a crowded field
Reinforces your values—because ethics aren’t just internal, they’re public
But here’s the thing…
Too many organizations aren’t talking about this.If your org doesn’t already have a public-facing commitment to ethical fundraising, consider making this the year you fix that.
Here's how:
Read the AFP Code of Ethics (and talk about it as a team)
Adopt it or align with it—whether formally or informally
Share your commitment on your website (think: "We follow the AFP Code of Ethics" in your footer or about page)
Train your team on ethical scenarios and how to respond
Revisit it annually—ethics should grow with your organization
Ethics aren’t extra. They’re essential.
Whether you’re a small shop or a national nonprofit, ethics aren’t a “nice to have.” They’re the foundation of lasting, values-aligned fundraising.
And if you're not sure how to get started?
That’s what I’m here for.
Let’s build something good—and ethical.
I'm Liz. I help nonprofits raise more money with less stress—so you can stay focused on the work that matters. You don’t have to figure out fundraising alone. Let’s talk.
